Winter Storm Safety Tips from the Glasgow Fire Department

As Glasgow prepares for an incoming winter storm, the Glasgow Fire Department is sharing important safety reminders for residents. During extreme cold and potential power outages, the use of space heaters and generators increases, and if not used properly, both can quickly become serious fire and safety hazards.

The following tips are provided to help keep homes, families, and neighborhoods safe throughout the winter weather event.

Space Heater Safety

The Glasgow Fire Department reminds residents that space heaters are a leading cause of winter home fires. To reduce risk:

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, curtains, bedding, and clothing.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended or operating while sleeping.
  • Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or power strips.
  • Use heaters equipped with automatic shutoff features that turn the unit off if it tips over.
  • Turn heaters off before leaving the room or the home.

Generator Safety

Generators can provide critical power during outages, but improper use can result in fires or dangerous carbon monoxide exposure.

  • Never operate generators inside homes, garages, basements, or near windows and doors.
  • Place generators outdoors only, well away from openings where exhaust fumes could enter the home.
  • Allow generators to cool completely before refueling to prevent fires.
  • Use extension cords that are approved and rated for outdoor use.
  • Install and regularly test carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

Staying Safe During the Storm

Cold weather and power disruptions bring added risks, but many emergencies are preventable with preparation and awareness. The Glasgow Fire Department encourages residents to share this information, check on neighbors when possible, and use caution throughout the storm.

By following these safety tips, we can help protect our community and navigate the winter weather safely together.
