FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2024) – Glasgow Municipal Airport is set to undergo a major upgrade thanks to $1.2 million in state funding for a much-needed Fuel System Replacement Project. The funding will be used to replace the aging system with modern above ground fueling infrastructure that meets all current fueling and environmental regulations and enhances operations at the airport. The current fueling system, which consists of two 10,000-gallon underground fuel tanks that store jet fuel and avgas, has been in place for 31 years and has now exceeded its useful life. This new system will enhance the airport’s operational efficiency, ease maintenance and mitigate potential environmental risks. Glasgow is one of only two underground fueling systems left in the state, making this replacement an essential step toward sustainability and future-proofing airport operations. “Investing in our state’s airports is essential to maintaining strong local economies,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “The fuel system replacement at Glasgow Municipal Airport will ensure long-term sustainability, reduce environmental risks and support the continued growth of aviation-related businesses across the region.” The Glasgow airport is one of 58 public use airports in Kentucky and funding for the project is being administered by the Kentucky Department of Aviation (KDA). Since the start of the Beshear Administration, nearly $1.9 million in state funds has been invested at the Glasgow Municipal Airport for other improvement projects, including apron reconstruction, T-hangar site grading, and replacing a rotating beacon. To date, approximately $72 million has been awarded to public use airports under the Beshear Administration.KDA Commissioner Mark Carter emphasized the importance of the Glasgow airport to the region, stating, “The Glasgow airport is an important economic driver for Barren County and surrounding counties, with over 41,000 takeoffs and landings annually and an economic contribution exceeding $9 million each year. This investment ensures state-of-the-art aviation fuel availability for local businesses, private aircraft, and transient operators.” “Securing this aviation grant to upgrade our fuel system is a crucial step for Glasgow Municipal Airport. This investment not only addresses vital environmental concerns but also bolsters tourism and fuels economic growth in our region,” said Glasgow Municipal Airport Board Chairman Sam Chambers. This project will significantly improve fueling operations at Glasgow Municipal Airport, which supports the local community and the region’s business aviation and tourism sectors. The project will start once the airport awards a contract for the construction of the new fuel system. ### |
