Common Property Code Violations

Protecting property value. Keeping Glasgow safe and beautiful.

Maintaining your property isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a civic responsibility. Following the property code keeps neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and more valuable for everyone. Below are some of the most common violations to avoid:

What’s required:

  • Use official city-issued trash containers

  • Place carts at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day

  • Return carts the same day after pick-up

  • Do not dispose of hot ashes, paint, liquids, hazardous waste, construction debris, auto parts, dirt, or rocks

Posting signs on public right-of-way—including utility poles, medians, traffic lights, and curbs—is illegal and dangerous. Keep signs off city property.

  • Grass, weeds, and brush must be kept below 8 inches

  • Do not throw yard waste into streets, sidewalks, or drainage systems

  • Maintain the area between your property and the road

  • Vehicles that are unlicensed, inoperable, or disassembled may not be kept on your property.
Painting and bodywork must be done inside a permitted, enclosed structure.

Vacant buildings must be secured against entry.

If a structure is open or deteriorating, owners may be required to board it up or move forward with rehabilitation or demolition.

Every home must display visible address numbers in a contrasting color that can be seen from the road in both directions.

This is essential for emergency services.

Yard and household waste like auto parts, plastic, paper, furniture, and other discarded items must be properly disposed of—not left outside. Owners are responsible for transporting items to the landfill.
